The history of Sundial School’s history dates back to 1966 when the reverend Sister Borgia established a school (then located at the current Sr. Magda location) to cater to girls who had completed primary education and had no other options available to them.
The initial intention was to teach female students basic skills and trades such as sewing and cooking.
In the early days, the school faced challenges like lack of stoves, pots, and access to water. Despite these obstacles, it continued to provide valuable education.Male students were admitted to the school for the first time in 1986. Over the years, Sundial School has evolved, expanded its offerings, and adapted to the changing needs of the community Sundial School is currently located on the Pondfill in Philipsburg, next to the Philipsburg Jubilee Library.
Hillside Christian - Helmich Snijders
The Helmich Snijders Hillside Christian School is located in the heart of St. Peters, surrounded by beautiful green hills. The language of instruction at the Helmich Snijders Campus is Dutch, and English is taught as a subject. Christian Schools’ journey began in the 1960s when Lt. Governor Japa Beaujon of St. Maarten recruited the Snijders couple from the Netherlands for their educational passion. They moved to St. Maarten in 1965 and, facing a lack of schooling options for their daughter, established a Christian school. By 1968, they founded the FPCEWI and, despite financial hurdles, opened a school in 1974 with 55 students. The school, initially named St. Peters Hillside School, expanded over the years, adding facilities and early childhood education. In 2010, the government provided a new facility in Cay Hill, leading to the naming of the Helmich Snijders and Asha Stevens campuses, honoring the founders’ legacy.
